Quick Training Tips

1)      CONSISTENCY – Our experience has shown us that the most important thing in training is consistency. You can improve at an incredible speed by just doing the little things on a consistent basis. It’s very much like dieting. Is it better to do a little exercise and eat right every other day or spend 3 weeks doing nothing and on a single day exercise like mad and starve yourself? A little effort in consistency goes a long way.

2)      ASK AWAY – Anything and everything that you do in the school has a developmental purpose. And as students, we want to make sure you know why you do the things that you do. The best way to learn and improve is to know the why behind things. Don’t be afraid to ask your Sifu or your fellow senior students. We are always glad to help you in anyway.

3)      BASICS – It’s not how much you learned that speeds up your development, it’s how well you learned the basics that’s key.  Too often, students want to jump from one concept to another without having a decent grasp on any of the subjects.  Master the basics and everything else will come easily. First and foremost, develop a strong foundation.

4)      DON’T WORRY ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR – Don’t be too concerned with what your fellow student is learning. Focus on your own studies. It is not uncommon for students to say, “So and so is already working on another form, or a more advanced drill, how come I’m not?” The grass may look greener on the side, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is so. As Bruce Lee stated, “Don’t concentrate on the finger, or else you will miss all the heavenly glory.”  Focus on your own development.

5)      YOU – You may have the best of everything, from teachers, to facilities and educational training. But if you want to improve your Gung Fu, it all boils down to YOU!  No one can make you better unless you want to. Here at Windy City Wing Chun, you have the resources to take your Gung Fu as far as you can imagine, but one thing we can’t teach is having the heart to do so.
