Famous quote

Jed: I have an M.D. from Harvard, I am board certified in cardio-thoracic medicine and trauma surgery, I have been awarded citations from seven different medical boards in New England, and I am never, ever sick at sea. So I ask you; when someone goes into that chapel and they fall on their knees and they pray to God that their wife doesn't miscarry or that their daughter doesn't bleed to death or that their mother doesn't suffer acute neural trama from postoperative shock, who do you think they're praying to? Now, go ahead and read your Bible, _Dennis_, and you go to your church, and, with any luck, you might win the annual raffle, but if you're looking for God, he was in operating room number two on November 17, and he doesn't like to be second guessed. You ask me if I have a God complex. Let me tell you something: I am God.

The Matrix

Morpheus: What are you waiting for? You're faster than this. Don't think you are, know you are. Come on. Stop trying to hit me and hit me.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is just relax and do it.  Don’t force the action to happen.  Just let it happen.

Morpheus: I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it.

The truth in wing chun is, just like with any other aspect in life, the only one that can make you good is you.  You have to practice, you have to come to class, you have to put the time in and train correctly.

Morpheus: Neo, sooner or later you're going to realize just as I did that There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Talking and doing are two totally different things.

Morpheus “You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, and disbelief. Free your mind.” Matrix – In time, believing in yourself and knowing yourself is what it’s all about, your Wing Chun won’t work unless you believe in it. Morpheus: I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it.
In time, believing in yourself and knowing yourself is what it’s all about.  Your wing chun won’t work if you don’t believe in it.

Trinity ... "Dodge this."

Agent Smith: Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.

Cypher: I know what you're thinking, 'cause right now I'm thinking the same thing. Actually, I've been thinking it ever since I got here: Why oh why didn't I take the BLUE pill?

Morpheus: Stop trying to hit me and hit me!

Neo: What are you trying to tell me? That I can dodge bullets?
Morpheus
: No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.

Morpheus: The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Tank: So what do you need? Besides a miracle.
Neo:
Guns. Lots of guns.

Neo: I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid... afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules or controls, borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you.

Morpheus: You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, and disbelief. Free your mind.

Trinity: Please Neo, you have to trust me.
Neo: Why?
Trinity: Because you have been down there Neo, you know that road, you know exactly where it ends. And I know that's not where you want to be.

Good, adaptation, improvisation, but your weakness is not your technique.

Morpheus: How did I beat you?
Neo:
You... you're too fast.
Morpheus
: Do you believe that my being stronger or faster has anything to do with my muscles in this place? Do you think that's air you're breathing now? Again!

Morpheus: What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.

Morpheus: he's beginning to believe

Morpheus: Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

Agent Smith: We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start. All that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known terrorist to justice.
Neo: Yeah. Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I may have a better one. How about, I give you the finger [He does.] ...and you give me my phone call.

Don Diego de la Vega: Do you know how to use that thing?
Alejandro Murrieta: Yes! The pointy end goes into the other man.

Don Diego de la Vega: There is a saying, a very old saying: when the pupil is ready the master will appear.

Lieutenant Danny Roman: You want my blood? Take my blood!

Dr. David Banner: And what have I done to my son, Miss Ross? Nothing. I tried to improve on the limits in myself. Myself, not him. Can you understand? To improve on nature, MY nature, knowledge of one's self. It's the only path to the truth that gives men the power to go beyond God's boundaries.

The ultimate goal of Wing Chun is to understand and control yourself.  The more you control yourself, the less others can control you.  This is the path of the gung-fu man.

Hulk

Dr. Ian Malcolm: I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here: it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it, you want to sell it!  It’s not a question if you could, but whether or not you should.

Wing chun skill doesn’t give you the right to fight, but the ability to choose if you should fight.  Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should.

Dr. Grant: Try to imagine yourself in the Cretaceous period. You get your first look at this six-foot turkey as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird-- lightly, bobbing his head. And you keep still, because you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement, like T-Rex; he'll lose you if you don't move. But no, not Velociraptor. You stare at him and he just stares right back. And that's when the attack comes-- not from the front, but from the side, from the other two raptors you didn't even know were there. Because Velociraptor is a pack hunter, you see; he uses coordinated attack patterns, and he is out in force today. And he slashes at you with this, a six-inch retractable claw, like a razor, on the middle toe. He doesn't bother to bite your jugular like a lion, see. He slashes at you here, or here ...
Dr. Sattler: Oh, Alan.
Dr. Grant: or maybe across the belly, spilling your intestines. The point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. So, you know, try to show a little respect.
Kid: OK. (861k)

Ian Malcolm: Taking dinosaurs off this island is the worst idea in the long, sad history of bad ideas.
Probably the biggest blunder in history, Ken Harnishes greed and his lust for power, made him think that if he switched teachers from Sifu to Master Ho, he would achieve a higher level.  In reality, his blunder was our greatest reward, oh if he could turn back time.

Ian Malcolm:
Oooh! Ahhh! That's how it always starts. Then later there's running and screaming.

Kill Bill Volume 1

Hattori Hanzo: I'm done doing what I swore an oath to God 28 years ago to never do again. I've created, "something that kills people." And in that purpose I was a success. I've done this, because philosophically I'm sympathetic to your aim. I can tell you with no ego, this is my finest sword. If on your journey, you should encounter God, God will be cut.

The Sifu’s at Windy City Wing Chun, say this with no ego.  Fong’s Wing Chun is the finest martial art.

Hattori Hanzo: For those regarded as warriors, when engaged in combat the vanquishing of thine enemy can be the warrior's only concern. Suppress all human emotion and compassion. Kill whoever stands in thy way, even if that be Lord God, or Buddha himself. This truth lies at the heart of the art of combat.

Again, the philosophy of no mercy.  This is one of the truths of the art of wing chun.

Kill Bill Volume 2

Pai Mei: [punches through a block of wood from three inches away] Since your arm now belongs to me, I want it strong. Can you do that?
The Bride: I can, but not that close.
Pai Mei: Then you can't do it. What if your enemy is three inches in front of you, what do you do then? Curl into a ball? Or do you put your fist through him?

Pai Mei: It's the wood that should fear your hand, not the other way around. No wonder you can't do it, you acquiesce to defeat before you even begin.

Learning to explode your punch will take time and practice.  But when you do, you’ll be able to explode it at any distance and at any time.

Kill bill 1 & 2

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.

Wing Chun develops your fighting ability.  Just because you can fight doesn’t mean that you should.  There are times when you use the skill of Wing Chun to avoid the fight altogether.

Saruman: We must join with Him, Gandalf. We must join with Sauron. It would be wise, my friend.
Gandalf: Tell me, "friend", when did Saruman the Wise abandon reason for madness?

You cannot hope to join the wing chun we teach here with other arts or other lines of wing chun.  To try to join them together would be madness.  The accent up the mountain of wing chun is long journey.  Why would you want to climb part way and head down only to start the assent up another mountain.  The higher you go the better the view is.

Gandalf: You cannot pass! I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow. You shall not pass!

You are the wielder of the skill of wing chun!  When using the skill of wing chun no enemy hands shall pass through your guard!

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Pippin: The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm. It's the last thing he'll expect.

It’s safer for the wing chun person to move in and not allowing the enemy to fire their attacks.  The more chances you give your enemy to hit you, the better chance he will.

Aragorn: “Show them no mercy . . . for you shall receive none.”

This is the attitude you must have for street survival.  If you don’t, you’ll be in a world of hurt.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Aragorn: Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you *stand, Men of the West!*

When the time comes that you have to use your skill in the defense of yourself or another, do not worry about the outcome or the consequences.  Fight to survive the situation.

Theodon “Sound the charge. . . Take them head on”

You must have the guts to move in and close the gap on anyone, regardless of their size.

Theodon “Sound the charge – Take them head on” Return of the King
Closing the gap involves having the guts to moves  in and taking on anybody regardless of size coming to us head on.

Lisa: What are you gonna do?
Creasy: What I do best. I'm gonna kill 'em. Anyone that was involved. Anybody who profited from it. Anybody who opens their eyes at me.
Lisa: [Whispering] You kill 'em all.

Remember, you play your game, the wing chun game.  Do what you do best.  Do what you practice, do what you train, and do what you develop.

Rayburn: Well, you know what they say. A bullet always tells the truth.

You can learn a lot about a person by simply looking at their punch.

Creasy: Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting.

Once the decision to fight is made, it’s your job to arrange the meeting.

Rayburn: A man can be an artist... in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Creasey's art is death. He's about to paint his masterpiece.

In regards to no mercy when you decide to fight.  Your art will be death.

Rayburn “A bullet always tells the truth.” Man on Fire – You can learn allot about a person through his punch.

Uncle Ben: Remember, with great power. comes great responsibility.

The skill of wing chun is powerful and lethal.  Great responsibility falls upon you when to use it.

Spiderman

Rocky

Apollo's Trainer: He doesn't know it's a damn show! He thinks it's a damn fight!

Wing chun is not a sport.  It is real training for real fighting.

Apollo's Trainer: He's a southpaw. I don't want you messing with southpaws. They do everything backwards

When people see the wing chun centerline punch, they don’t understand it.  People’s perceptions of martial arts is solely shaped on what they see in movies and T.V.

Rocky II

Duke: He's all wrong for us, baby. I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man kept coming after you. Now we don't need no man like that in our lives.

Wing chun can adjust to any fighter that comes after us.  They can do whatever they want, because we know what we want to do.

Rocky III

Interviewer: What's your prediction for the fight?
Clubber Lang: My prediction?
Interviewer: Yes, your prediction.
[Clubber looks into camera]
Clubber Lang: Pain!

If you were to predict the outcome of genuine wing chun, your enemy would be lucky to be feeling pain.

Rocky IV

Duke: [to Rocky] You see? You see? He's not a machine, he's a man, he's a man.

Don’t be intimidated by fancy kicks, punches, or the size or your enemy.  Trust in your skill and you will overcome.

Drago: If he dies, he dies.

You cannot worry about the outcome of an encounter with a criminal.  Your goal is to survive by any means necessary.  And if that means the criminal dies, he dies.

Rocky Balboa

Duke: So, what we'll be calling on is good ol’ fashion blunt force trauma. Horsepower. Heavy-duty, cast-iron, piledriving punches that will have to hurt so much they'll rattle his ancestors. Every time you hit him with a shot, it's gotta feel like he tried kissing the express train. Yeah! Let's start building some hurtin' bombs!

Every time you deliver a punch, palm, elbow or any other strike in wing chun, they should be kissing the express train.

Rocky Balboa: I'd hold you up to say to your mother, "this kid's gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid's gonna be somebody better than anybody I ever knew." And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watching you, every day was like a privilege. Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you're no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow. Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain't gonna have a life. Don't forget to visit your mother.

Wing chun is an art that will test you, and test you, and test you until you don’t think you can take it anymore.  It’s the perseverance and proper development that separates the skilled and the unskilled.

John Mason: Never Hesitate.

When the time comes to make the decision to fight or not, it must be made in an instant.

The Rock

Ronin

Sam: Lady, I never walk into a place I don't know how to walk out of.

Wing chun is common sense over all else.  Just because we can defend ourselves doesn’t mean we put ourselves in bad positions.

Star Trek: First Contact

Captain Jean-Luc Picard: I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And *I* will make them pay for what they've done.

There is a point between you and your enemy that cannot be crossed.  Once he’s in kicking range to hit you, you must move in with full intent and no hesitation.

Predator

Dutch: If it bleeds, we can kill it.

No matter, how big, how fast, or how strong the criminal is, they can bleed and die like anyone else.

Frank Castle, “In certain..."extreme" situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue... natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive; it's an emotional response. No. Not vengeance. This, is punishment.” The Punisher Some times all you can depend on will be yourself and your skill.
