SCHOOL
INFORMATION
Who is Windy City Wing Chun Gung
Fu?
A fellowship of three all trained in
the art of Wing Chun under Master Augustine Fong. When we began, we took our 30+
years of combined experience in martial arts, and designed
a school based on what we felt was the most effective route of
teaching self-defense. We felt many of the schools today
are geared more to how many students they can have, instead of the
quality of self defense they are teaching. We saw all
the things we didn't like in other schools and did away with
them.
Our goal, our passion, is to
teach the art of self-defense in the most simple, effective, and
realistic way.
Our main location is at the
Hamlin Park district, located at 3035
N. Hoyne. We meet there every Saturday morning from
11:30am - 1:30pm. We also have additional locations for
students interested in meeting more than just once a week.
(Belmont area or Mount Prospect suburbs). Email or call for
further info.
What are the classes like at Windy
City?
1. Fun and respectful atmosphere
to learn - Class size are maintained where students can get
the appropriate attention necessary to progress. Thus,
everyone gets to know each other on a first name
basis.
2. Progress at your own pace
- On average most students come twice a week to class.
However, this depends all on the students schedule, free time,
and desire. You progress at your own pace, if you want to
come once a week fine, if you want to come 4 times a week,
that's fine also. Its all depends on you.
4. Both beginners and advance -
Classes are broken down into appropriate levels.
5) Men and
women - No children, animals, or unexplained
X-file beings
6) Day, evening, and weekend
classes - Regardless of your schedule, if you want to learn
we'll be able to setup classes for you.
7) Group and private - Work
with a small group of individuals or get personalized attention
with your own teacher.
What other things to do Windy City
Wing Chun offer?
-
Depaul Street self-defense
- We
offer an intensive self-defense course designed to deal with
everyday street situations.
Street self-defense is
held at the awesome Ray Meyer Fitness & Recreation center in
Chicago, Il. (Fullerton/Sheffield). These classes
are offered at DePaul University every semester and fill up
quickly. We have a maximum capacity of 25 students per
class, and depending on demand classes have ranged from 10 to 20
students per six week course.
-
Seminars - We also host an
annual seminar with Sifu Augustine Fong. Seminar
topics range from Siu Lim Tao, chi sao, street fighting, etc,
etc. For more information check out our events page.
What are the benefits of taking
Wing Chun?
1. Release stress -
All martial arts help to relieve stress, but in Wing Chun this
is not achieved by hitting someone and letting your aggression
run through. The mental development in Wing Chun is in 4
parts: Emptying the mind, quiet, sinking, and softness.
Stress occurs when the mind is bombarded with outside
forces. Such things as relationship, job, money, etc
can all lead to be a burden at times. Emptiness is learning how
to quiet the mind and regain focus again on a single
concept.
2. Get in shape - Wing chun
is referred to as the lazy man art, since its focus is more on
bone structure and using less muscle. However classes can
be designed more aerobically for the individual. The forms
themselves help to promote Chi Gong. Chi packing, better
flexibility, improved reflexes are just some of the health
benefits your received from this art.
3. Self confidence, awareness,
discipline, etc - In the beginning most people take it for
self defense, but if they give themselves into the art, they'll
find out its main purpose is to help the individual find out who
he/she is as a person. In the end, what we all seek is
control of our lives, and that's what Wing Chun is all about,
controlling yourself first, then the ability to control
others.
4) Self defense - If
you want to learn how to protect yourself, no other art is more
effective at doing so than Wing Chun. This is the ultimate
in self defense for anybody. People of smaller size,
women, can effectively use these techniques to protect
themselves from harm.
5) Internal and external
development - Develop the body from the inside out.
Wing Chun is both an internal as well as external
art.
6) Mind, body and spirit -
You have the complete package with Wing Chun. You have
internal and external development for the body along with the
ultimate in self defense. The art focuses on the mental
development of quiet, emptiness, sinking, and softness.
And finally the spiritual side is taught as well, learning
detachment.
