To get the flow, you have to have the timing in order to apply the technique. While chain punching is the first development of working in a flow, its also the basic level of just learning how to alternate your hands in a 3 count. In this video, you see Sifu apply regular timing, break timing and create timing. In Wing Chun you have 8 different timings, if you can master that, then speed will no longer be the main factor, but timing.
This drill illustrates the concept of equalizing and neutralizing the force. Imagine the water bottle between both of their hands, upon contact if the amount of pressure is maintained even when Alain moves, the stick will continue and the water bottle will not fall. Equalizing the force is the moment you touch, then neutralize is what you do aftewards, constantly adjusting to whatever the force dictates.
Sifu shows this every so often, that when you can control yourself, you can control others. What he’s doing here is freezing the point, and making Alain not only stick to his point, but locking his motion as well. That’s why you have to remember, when your doing attacks on Sifu, that’s him allowing you to do it, otherwise he could just freeze you and you wouldn’t even leave the point.
The triangle that you place square in front of you not only deals with punches and kicks, but can also be used to deal with take downs. Now this is just a simple drill of maintaining a triangle in front of you while someone attempts to go for one or both legs. In real application, one would not keep fending off the opponent from taking him down, but hit him while maintain the triangle.
Here is a typical joint lock used by bouncers, to help escort drunk patrons out of the bar. Simple rule of thumbs is don’t fight the force, especially when the meat head is 2 to 3 times your size. By simply feeling how he holds the grip on you, you can apply different techniques to escape out of these locks.
In another example of don’t fight the force, Sifu demonstrates how difficult it is to actually lift someone who gives the person dead weight. This is your natural reaction, but through time people end up getting tight and tense up. If you’ve ever seen a little kid being picked up by their parent they immediately go into dead weight and make it much more difficult to pick up. Simple rule, don’t fight the force.
