How did you get interested in wing
chun?
My start in wing chun was purely
luck. I totally chanced upon learning wing chun. I
was standing in line at the movie theater. an old friend
whom I hadn't seen in three years was there. we were
catching up on what each other was doing. he told me he
was taking this martial art called wing chun. he was really
encouraging about going to check it out. I had always been
pretty athletic. in high school I played football,
basketball and softball. now the high school was over I found
myself looking for a new physical outlet. so, I decide to check it out. when
I went tot go check it
out I was hooked instantly. I was also thinking of going
into law enforcement. I thought it would be a good idea
to lean how to fight. and, almost eight years later I still
love it.
Why do you like wing chun?
I like wing chun for several
reasons. first off wing chun is a form of self-defense
that is second to none. wing chun isn't about tournaments or sports. wing chun is about how
defeat an opponent in the most efficient and practical way. wing chun haws changed my view
on some things as well. I'm not saying I have some
clairvoyance because of wing chun. but it has changed
my perspective on things. I look at things now in a more
common sense way. wing chun also has given me a mind to
body connection that is second to non. I've tried yoga, working
out and other meditative ideas. and nothing has come close to the self awareness that wing chun offers.
Have you ever taken other
martial arts?
Yes, when I was in sixth grade I took karate.
I didn't have the mental maturity to continue
with it. I lost interest after a year. when I was in
high school I did wrestle for a little while, but that was it.
What do you think is the coolest
thing about wing chun?
It has to be chi sau, double
sticky hands. ed says it best. just imagine playing a video game, but you get to be in the
video game. sticky hands
lets the person truly express themselves. It's like
developing your own personality. that's another cool thing
about wing chun. you don't conform to wing chun, wing chun
conforms to you.
Why did you decide to teach wing
chun?
There comes a point in everyone's
martial arts life when you just know the time is right to teach.
I was also really disappointed in seeing all these bogus ways
to self defense. I 100% believe that wing chun is second
to none when it comes to realistic self-defense. but I do
believe a lot of it has to do with my sifu being in Arizona.
if he were here or I was there, I really think I would still be
just studying wing chun with sifu fong.
